“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” [ Romans 12:21 NIV ]
It seems these days we are more overwhelmed by evil than ever before. So much so, that behaviors and certain ways of life are considered “norms” to us that we all just accept and have become numb to. Although it may be all around us, we can overcome the negativity and darkness, denying its ability to drag us down or tempt us, and allow God’s light within us to defeat the evil with good.
As Believers, we are meant to be keenly aware of what is considered evil, and God put in us a new heart so that we may turn away from this evil through His grace.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”
– Ezekiel 36:26-27 NIV
Proactively “doing good” or “being good” is not always easy to do when you are surrounded by so many others going in a different direction. We all learned quickly as children that it can be a challenge not to follow your peers, even if we know they are doing wrong. But with the light of God, we have the strength we need to embrace His goodness to lead us on the right path. When you allow God to lead you in His ways, you become stronger and more resilient. God’s goodness comes through you, and He will overcome the evil for you.
God’s goodness comes through you, and He will overcome the evil for you.
[ Life Application ]
How Do I Overcome Evil With Good?
- Pray to God, asking for His strength and light
- Receive God’s will and follow His ways
- Gain resilience through God’s goodness working in you
Pray for God to lead you to His light and give you strength to turn away from what is evil in the world. Ask for God to show you His will, committing to His ways instead of the world’s ways (Romans 12:2). When you are the example to others of going against evil and allowing the light of God’s goodness to prevail through you, there is nothing in the darkness that can’t be conquered!
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.
– Romans 12:2
