A Heavy Burden
The burden of guilt and shame upon our shoulders is a weight too heavy to bear. We don’t handle it well, because as God’s children, we are not meant to convict ourselves (Romans 8:1-2), just as we are not meant to judge others (Romans 14:13). When we do, we open the door for the enemy to poison our minds and hearts with lies of self-loathing, doubt, anger, depression, despair, and self-conviction. This leads to nothing by pain and heartache that can also spread like a disease to those you encounter.
The Truth of God’s Forgiveness
God provides us with His forgiveness and love, and through the gift of His Son Jesus, we can be free of guilt and shame. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice for us, although we still do wrong and can make mistakes, we are separated from our sins and immediately cleared and cleansed from the darkness that they represent. When we choose not to believe that truth or allow the lies of the enemy to make us believe that we should feel ashamed and convicted by the mistakes we make, the power of God’s forgiveness is muted, therefore, the gift of His peace is squandered.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
– Romans 8:1-2 NIV
If our Father in heaven is not leaving us in condemnation for our sins or mistakes, why would we put that on ourselves or allow anyone else to? As those who believe, our Father gave us the power of the blood of Jesus to shelter us from that pain and the evil that it spreads.
“As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.’”
– Romans 10:11 NIV
Life Application
How Do I Avoid Guilt and Shame?
- Ask for Forgiveness
- Believe in God’s Mercy
- Release It to God
When you sin or make a mistake, don’t hesitate to look to God, confess to Him in prayer and believe in your heart that He’s already forgiven you and reconciled what was done. Just as a balloon rises to the sky when released, let go of it now and accept the peace of God’s forgiveness. When you do this, you rise above the sin that no longer has any power over you and walk upright in the peace and grace we are meant to receive, with total freedom from the burden of guilt and shame.
“Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.”
– Psalm 32:1-2 NIV
